Mid-Year Tech Check: Is Your Business’s IT Holding You Back?

We’re officially halfway through the year, can your tech say the same?

In today’s fast-paced business environment, technology is at the heart of everything you do. But as your business grows and evolves, it’s easy to overlook the systems running in the background until they slow you down or stop working altogether.

Studies show that employees lose nearly 100 hours a year due to outdated or underperforming tech. That’s nearly 12 full workdays per person, gone. And that doesn’t even account for the ripple effect: missed deadlines, lost revenue, and the frustration that comes with frequent tech issues. For small and mid-sized businesses, especially those without a dedicated IT department, this kind of inefficiency adds up fast.

At Technology Plus, we know firsthand how costly neglecting your IT infrastructure can be. That’s why we encourage our clients to take a proactive approach with regular tech check-ins, starting with a simple, smart habit: the Mid-Year Tech Health Check.

🔧 Your Mid-Year Tech Health Checklist

A few simple steps can make a big difference in how your tech performs and how your team works. Use this checklist as a guide or reach out to us for a more hands-on assessment!

✅ 1. Check for Software & System Updates

Unpatched software can leave your business open to cyberattacks or performance issues. Make sure all operating systems, applications, antivirus tools, and even firmware are fully updated. Don’t forget less obvious systems like printers and VoIP phones, they count, too.

✅ 2. Evaluate Hardware Performance

Is that old desktop taking five minutes to boot up? Do your team’s laptops run out of storage or crash randomly? If any devices are more than 3–5 years old, it might be time to upgrade. Replacing aging hardware not only boosts productivity but can also improve security.

✅ 3. Test Backup & Recovery Systems

When was the last time you tested your backup system, not just if backups are being made, but if they can be restored quickly and completely? Backups are your safety net, and they need to be reliable. Make sure they’re current, secure, and regularly tested.

✅ 4. Review Cybersecurity Protocols

Cyber threats don’t take summers off. Review your firewall settings, password policies, email filtering, and antivirus coverage. Have you implemented multi-factor authentication (MFA)? Are employees up to date on phishing awareness? Now’s a great time to reassess.

✅ 5. Assess Network Health

Your network is your tech backbone. Check that your internet connection is stable and your Wi-Fi covers all work areas. Routers and switches should have updated firmware and no performance issues. If you’re constantly restarting your equipment, it might be time to upgrade.

✅ 6. Evaluate Business Growth Needs

Have you hired new employees or added new services this year? Your tech setup should support that growth. Assess whether you need more software licenses, stronger endpoint protection, better collaboration tools, or additional support.

Plan Ahead Before Problems Arise

A mid-year check-in helps you stay ahead of issues, rather than react to them when it’s too late. Just like you wouldn’t wait until your car breaks down to change the oil, your IT systems need routine care to run at their best.

At Technology Plus, we work with businesses to deliver hands-on, proactive IT support from tech audits and network upgrades to cybersecurity hardening and strategic planning. We’re not just here when something breaks; we’re here to keep things working.

Whether you’re overdue for a full review or just want a second opinion, our team is ready to help.
